Canje: An Austin Restaurant Named One of the Best in America

AUSTIN (KXAN) Canje, an Austin restaurant that pays homage to Guyanese and Caribbean cuisine, was recently recognized by The New York Times as one of the best restaurants in the United States. Located near East Sixth Street and Chicon Street on the east side of the city, Canje opened its doors in October of last year. The restaurant is owned by Srijith Gopinathan, who has earned two Michelin stars for his work at Taj Campton Place in San Francisco. Gopinathan is not the only chef to be recognized for their work. Josh Dorcak, who runs a tasting menu counter at the end of an alley in downtown Ashland, has created what he calls Cascada cuisine - a series of picturesque Japanese-influenced miniatures of memorable poise.

Trevor Moran, an Irishman who spent four years cooking at Noma in Copenhagen, has opened Locust in Nashville. This deceptively modest restaurant is a favorite among Nashville chefs when they have days off. Charley Soulivong has been running her restaurant since 1999. The restaurant was founded by Kitty Kawakami and her husband Paul in 1951 and Soulivong uses the recipe that was passed down to her. Bacoa is another restaurant that has been recognized by The New York Times as one of the best restaurants in the country. This plant-based restaurant is located in the Sonoma Valley and offers diners a unique experience by placing their tables right in the center of the farm. Tavel Bristol-Joseph has made a name for himself in Austin with Emmer's Cakes & Rye and Hestia, which he co-owns.

In Los Angeles, there is a restaurant that is continuously remodeled with dynamic dishes that are easy to love and difficult to classify - such as frog legs with black sauce. This restaurant is located in Camp North End and is one of five new locations that Colliers and his group of restaurants have planned for the complex. Bouchon Bistro is another well-established name in the restaurant world. This location is not its first, but it still offers diners a unique experience with its menu that takes the time to ensure you know exactly what you're ordering. Lee has also opened a Korean cuisine restaurant in Kentucky called WDRB.

This restaurant's website is almost like a crash course in bartending. Barbecue in Houston, chef Alejandro Paredes's spartan fish market in San Antonio, chef Tiffany Derry's comfort food restaurant Roots Southern Table in Dallas and the old taqueria Sylvia's in Brownsville are all restaurants that define the culinary moment across all four corners of the country. These restaurants are relatively close to at least one couple.
